Jensen Hughes has a job opening for a Project Manager in our Concrete Materials Laboratory.  The successful candidate would be based in our Chicago, IL office.  The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience and a BS or Master’s degree in civil, structural, or materials engineering with an emphasis on concrete and concrete materials, durability, concrete condition assessments, and service-life modeling.  The project manager will work on a variety of projects and collaborate with engineers and laboratory staff in all aspects of project work.

  • Assume responsibility for key aspects of projects and complete assignments with limited oversight.
  • Perform on-site investigations, condition assessments, and construction observations, which may include surveying, documenting distress, field testing, collecting data and materials samples, and preparing site visit reports.
  • Analyze laboratory and field data to facilitate problem solving and repair design
  • Interface with both internal and external clients
  • Be responsible for preparation of client deliverables.
  • Proactively participate in professional organizations and technical committees.
  • Help to ensure group profitability by generating business to sustain self-productivity and the productivity of others within the group
  • Explore and develop new markets
  • Write proposals, develop budgets, interact with clients, and manage multiple projects simultaneously professionally and efficiently.
  • Schedule, coordinate and delegate project work.


  • BS or Master’s degree in civil engineeringor materials science engineering
  • 5+ years of experience construction inspection, materials testing, laboratory work
  • Familiarity with standards and regulations (ASTM, AASHTO, ACI, etc.)
  • Concrete materials engineering with an emphasis on concrete, cementitious materials, aggregates, and durability
  • Engineering-In-Training (EIT) with the potential to become Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Ability to travel and work in the field, both domestically and internationally
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills
  • Position requires some work to be completed outdoors with potential exposure to inclement weather conditions. Work may be performed in confined spaces and at heights in excess of six feet. Some work is performed in a laboratory environment or in the field where the following conditions may apply: exposure to chemicals, noise, dust, variations in temperature and humidity, fumes and various types of equipment listed above;
  • May require the use of suspended scaffolding;
  • May require heavy lifting
  • Must have the ability to climb
