Jensen Hughes has a new job opportunity for a Wildfire Risk Mitigation Specialist in our Los Angeles CA office. We are a global team of engineers, scientists and consultants dedicated to advancing the science of safety to protect what matters most. Over the past few years, we have expanded our core strengths in code consulting, fire protection engineering and risk analysis into additional specialty engineering and consulting services such as forensics, wildfire risk mitigation, emergency management and security to better support a range of performance objectives from risk mitigation to compliance to resilience.


Qualified candidates will have a minimum of five (5) years of experience that includes a combination of Code Consulting, Fire/Wildfire Safety Planning, Performance Based Fire Safety Design, Wildfire/Fire Behavior Modelling, GIS Mapping/Analysis, Community Outreach and Risk & Vulnerability Assessments. Candidates should have proven project management and business development skills and experience. Responsibilities will include the management and implementation of a wide variety of fire/wildfire engineering design, community wildfire protection planning, wildfire risk mitigation, healthy forest & land resource management, wildfire forensics, emergency evacuation and communication planning, disaster risk management and other consulting projects

  • Plan and direct wildfire risk mitigation activities as part of project team
  • Manage small to medium scale projects
  • Conduct building, fire/wildfire code and fire/wildfire planning reviews and analyses.
  • Undertake fire/wildfire behavior modelling
  • Conduct emergency evacuation and communication planning
  • Evaluate healthy forests and land resource management assessments
  • Evaluate utility wildfire hazards, risks and vulnerabilities
  • Support wildfire forensic investigations
  • Undertake wildfire environmental assessments
  • Produce GIS mapping, geospatial analysis and visualization products
  • Prepare wildfire fire protection planning and/or wildfire risk mitigation strategy reports
  • Prepare wildfire environmental assessments and reports
  • Mentor other staff
  • Prepare and present technical reports and presentations.
  • Undertake community outreach programs as part of community wildfire protection plans
  • Undertake independent research and/or training to enhance existing services and/or fill-in gaps in knowledge, expertise and/or skills
  • Be a key player in Business Development activities.

Be an active participant in industry and/or technical committees in fire safety, wildfire risk mitigation, urban planning, environmental safety, utility wildfire management and/or disaster risk reduction



  • 5+ years of experience in a combination of the following – code consulting, wildfire/fire behavior modeling, wildfire/fire safety strategy and/or risk mitigation strategy development, environmental reviews, urban planning, healthy forest management, land resource management, post-fire recovery, fire/wildfire investigations and performance-based designs in a project design environment is required.
  • Excellent report writing, oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to present clear and technically sound fire safety strategies, wildfire risk mitigation plans and/or other consulting products to a range of audiences (e.g. fire and building departments, community planners, City/County/State/Federal agencies, general public, land resource managers, environmental groups, engineers/scientists and other design professionals)
  • Have good interpersonal skills and ability to work with people from different perspectives, interest groups and backgrounds.
  • Ability to approach challenges from a dynamic, complex system, interdisciplinary perspective
  • Can work independently and as part of a team

  • A professional license and/or certifications is desirable. We will also consider candidates that have significant industry experience in fire safety, wildfire behavior modelling, wildland firefighting, vegetation management/fuel treatment specialists, environmental consulting, healthy forest management, urban planning, emergency management and code consulting but are not on the engineering track
  • GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS) skills are desirable.
  • FBAN and/or wildfire behavior modelling skills are desirable.
  • MSc degree in one of the following is desirable: Disaster Risk Management, Engineering, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Urban Planning, Emergency Management, Environmental Sciences/Engineering
  • Firefighting and/or wildland fire fighting experience is desirable but not required
